When you are making stamps from vegetables or fruit, they need to be used immediately as the stamp will dry out, making it difficult to get a crisp image. There is a wide range of generic linoleum (or “linos”) that are used for carving. Soft-cutting linos have been developed in recent years which make carving easier. Even soft lino, however, is significantly harder than soft carving blocks and as such are more difficult to carve. As a result, it will be much harder to achieve fine detail. Cutting lino is relatively cheap and is often sold in large sheets which can be cut down as required. Lino is best attached to a stamping block when stamping. Independent stamp designers and companies also often offer a bespoke design service. There are many options available, but it is best to discuss your requirements with the stamp manufacturer, perhaps even explaining how you plan to use the stamps, before proceeding.
